Advisory Board

Your voice, your experience, and your opinion are the building blocks for our AYA Program.

Everything we do, from research to clinical care to education, is focused on meeting your needs. Our Advisory Board is made up of patients and survivors who want to help us craft our program and give us feedback on our work.

“Being on the board, my experiences with cancer turn into suggestions and feedback that can meaningfully improve the lives of current and future AYA patients. It’s been a great way to give back and make awesome connections!”

“After my cancer journey with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during pregnancy, I knew I wanted to give back and use my experience to help others. Through the UNC AYA Board, I have met so many wonderful patients & survivors who help me feel part of a community and I know I am not alone on this survivorship part. The resources and community events allow us to give back and provide others with important info critical to our treatment, survivorship and future.”

Advisory Board Projects

  • AYA website development: The board advised on the look and feel of this website; they wanted to see a dynamic website that would help newly diagnosed patients get information, resources, and referrals that were relevant to young people.
  • AYA Infusion Space: The board gave, and continues to give, ongoing input that was critical to bringing the young adult infusion space to fruition.
  • AYA programming and events: The board plans for scheduled events that bring together AYAs treated at UNC and beyond for social gatherings.
  • AYA Resource Library: The board helped develop this curated library of resources for AYAs across key topic areas, allowing patients and survivors to access needed resources at any point in their cancer experience.

“The UNC AYA team has done an incredible job soliciting input from current and past patients to provide world-class care and support for those living with such a difficult diagnosis and its aftereffects. I’m so grateful for this opportunity to help give back to adolescents and young adults during and after their cancer treatment at UNC.”

“Being part of the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Advisory Board has been an incredibly meaningful experience for me. Having personally faced two different types of cancer, I understand firsthand how overwhelming and isolating the cancer journey can be. This board has given me an opportunity to turn some of those experiences into something positive by giving back and helping advocate for changes that I hope will make the cancer experience better for the next young adult facing it.”
